Emma Handy

Emma HandyThe other day, as I was looking through the “Star Democrat”, the newspaper for Talbot County, I came across the obituary for Emma Handy, a graduate for the Kennard School (The school for African-Americans in Queen Anne’s County) and a long time eduator with Queen Anne’s County School System.

She graduated from the Kennard School in 1947. Mrs. Handy held a bachelors degree from Bowie State University and a masters degree from the University of Maryland. Over the years, she was the recipient of numerous awards and active in many local organizations.

Mrs. Handy started her teaching career in 1964 as a Teacher with the Enrichment Program. In 1966, she transferred to Kent Island Elementary School, where she taught for 15 years. In 1981, she was promoted to Assistant Principal and worked at Kent Island Elementary and Bayside Elementary until she retired in 1994.

According to Queen Anne’s County Superintendent of Schools, Carol Williamson, “She always made every effort to ensure students had every opportunity to be successful and to understand their value to their families and their communities…She influenced many of the students that she had to come back and work in education or to come back to the commuity and support education.”
