Pictures of the George Washington Carver School

While I was looking through the photo collection at the Cecil County Historical Society, I came across some pictures of the former George Washington Carver School located in Elkton.  It was the school for Cecil County African-Americans until 1964 when the school system integrated.  It presently houses the Central Offices for Cecil County Public Schools and is now known as the George Washington Carver Educational Leadership Center.

Here is the school building.  This picture was taken shortly after the school opened in 1951.

This was the predecessor to the George Washington Carver School.  This was known as the “Elkton Colored School”.  It was built at the top of the 20th Century and closed in 1951.  It is now used as storage for Cecil County Pubic Schools.
